The Gist

Boris Johnson's chief adviser Dominic Cummings will quit Downing Street after an extended period of infighting over his position.

The List

  • Cummings has been in the center of a Downing Street power struggle, which has also seen communication director Lee Cain leave days ago.
  • Cummings was reportedly furious at the resignation of Cain - both men have worked closely together as strategists of the 2016 Brexit campaign.
  • Several Tory MPs expressed their approval of the departure of Cummings and Cain - it's is seen as a chance for Boris Johnson to make a fresh start.
  • Known for his combative and mercurial influence, Cummings was the lynchpin of Boris Johnson's Downing Street administration.
  • Experts say the departure of Cummings could bring in a more conciliatory tone in Downing Street towards post-Brexit negotiations with the EU.
