Sweden introduces strictest coronavirus measures yet

The Gist

As the death toll continues to increase, Sweden's government is recommending the use of face masks on public transport.

The List

  • On Friday, Prime minister Stefan Lofven announce a range of new restrictions, which also include shutting down many municipal services for a month. 
  • The new coronavirus measures include a ban on alcohol sales after 20:00 and a cut from eight to four people per table that can sit together in restaurants. 
  • Sweden is the only country in Europe that has never imposed a COVID-19 lockdown. 
  • Sweden has seen nearly 360,000 cases and 8,000 deaths - many more than its Scandinavian neighbours.
  • Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf recently admitted his country had failed in its unique handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
