The Gist

The popular video-sharing app has announced a $200 million fund to support American creators on its platform.

The List

  • US content creators on TikTok will be able to apply to receive a part of the fund starting in 2021.
  • To qualify, you must be over 18, publish appropriate and innovative content, and have a large number of followers (the exact amount has not been specified).
  • TikTok representatives have stated that the size and duration of the fund will likely be expanded.
  • TikTok has come under scrutiny in the United States for allegedly collecting large amounts of user data without their consent.
  • Some US investors are apparently looking to buy TikTok from ByteDance, the Chinese company which currently owns the platform, in part to ensure it is not used for espionage by the Chinese government.
