The Gist

The new function is meant to reduce the amount of misinformation being forwarded on the popular messaging app.

The List

  • The feature involves adding a magnifying glass icon to received messages which have been forwarded more than 5 times.
  • Clicking the magnifying glass will open 'trustworthy' news related to the subject in the forwarded message.
  • For the time being it is only available to users in the UK, the US, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Ireland, and Spain.
  • WhatsApp has seen a surge in forwarded messages over the past few months, most of which relate to Covid-19.
  • It has also placed a limit on how many chats a message can be forwarded to.
  • Misinformation on WhatsApp has historically led to societal conflicts in countries such as India.
