India is one of WhatsApp's biggest markets with over 400 million users.

- WhatsApp has been testing its payments service in India for over 2 years.
- The announcement comes after India's financial regulator gave them the green light to begin operations.
- WhatsApp now makes it possible to transfer money between users directly to their bank accounts or debit cards.
- Payments are made via India's UPI system, a payments infrastructure made by some of the country's largest banks, which have partnered with WhatsApp.
